This Just In!

This is the cover for Downfall:

Isn’t it beautiful? That’s because it is the work of gifted Montréal artist and writer Lesley Fletcher. I am so fortunate that she agreed to do the artwork for the cover.  Please, go pay her a visit at her web site and consider her art. You won’t regret it!

I’m also very grateful to germancreative, at Fiverr, for the sleek, sophisticated professional design of the cover. Writers, if you need a cover designer, please consider her work!

Here’s the blurb for Downfall:

They Said It Was a Tragedy. They Said It Was an Accident. They Lied.

Second Chance is a Philadelphia alternative school designed for at-risk students. They live on campus, they take classes, and everyone hopes they’ll stay out of prison. And then one of them dies. When Curtis Templeton falls from a piece of scaffolding near the school, it’s called a tragic accident. A damned shame. A terrible loss. And everyone moves on.

Two years later, former police detective-turned-professor Joel Williams and two of his colleagues do a study of Second Chance for a research paper. When they find out about Curtis’ death, they start asking questions. And no-one wants to answer them.

The search for the truth takes Williams and his research partners behind the scenes of for-profit alternative education – and straight into the path of someone who thought everything would stay buried.

In the meantime, changes are coming to Tilton University. The School of Social Sciences is going to be the new home of a center for research on juvenile offenders. But not everyone is happy about it. YouthPromises, the company that’s underwriting the center, is a for-profit alternative program that has a stake in the outcome of any research the center does. What will that mean for the faculty? Williams finds himself caught in the controversy over the center, just as he’s finding out the truth about Second Chance.

  1. The cover’s fantastic, Margot, and so is the blurb! As you probably know, I worked in a similar facility for young people for some years and there were lots of debates around the idea of for-profits in the field, so I’m particularly intrigued to see that aspect from an American perspective. Can’t wait! Best of luck for the launch!

    • Thanks, FictionFan! I really feel fortunate that Lesley and germancreative were available to do this cover; they’re both extremely talented, and I’m lucky to have them on my side. As to the for-profit issues, I hope you won’t be too disappointed. It’s hard to know, when it’s fiction, how much of that debate to bring in, and how much is too much. At any rate, thanks very much for your support!

  2. What a timely topic to choose, Margot! With all the controversy stirred up about for-profits, plus the weird, do-nothing approach of our current Secretary if Education, I feel you’ve got a “ripped from the headlines” hit on your hands! Mazel tov! 🙂

    • Thank you, Brad! 🙂 I hope it does at least a bit of justice to the topic. It’s a complex and controversial one, and there’s a lot of ‘meat’ there, if that makes sense.

  3. That sounds great, Margot. The cover is VERY nice. You know I will be ordering one as soon as available.

  4. Great cover, Margot – and gosh, it sounds good! When will it be published?

  5. Love the cover, Margot, and CONGRATULATIONS! 🙂

  7. Love the cover and love the blurb! Weirdly, I worked as a facilitator at a program called Second Chance…teaching youth who’d been in the justice system other ways to create livelihoods.

    • Oh, that is odd, Jan! And thanks so much for the kind words. I’m glad you like the blurb, and I hope the story will work. As for the cover, I feel so fortunate to have had the talents of Lesley Fletcher and germancreative on my side. Both are really talented.

  8. Awesome! Celebrating your every success, Lady!

  9. Keishon

Lovely cover! and from the looks and sound of things, its a pretty dark place that Joel is heading into with this next adventure. Do your novels standalone? for fans to just jump in if they wanted to?

    • Thanks, Keishon. I feel really fortunate to have had Lesley Fletcher and germancreative to create the cover for me. I’m glad you like it. This one is, perhaps, a hint darker than my other novels. But I’ll be honest: the Joel Williams novels, even this one, aren’t as dark as the ones I think you like. Still, you can certainly enjoy this one without having read the others, and if you do read it, I hope you will enjoy it.
